Two Letters Make a Huge Difference

Many families come to us looking to help their child(ren) with building confidence. One of the most important things for children to learn how to build confidence is to never say "I can't"!  Add TWO MORE LETTERS to this phrase and have them change it to..."I CAN TRY"!

The fear of failure is so great in many children that they will not even try to do something for the fear of failing and not doing something correctly. How many times have you seen your child refuse to do something that they are not used to or appears somewhat difficult to do? Most times it is the fear of failure and the lack of confidence that keeps them from doing these types of activities.

As a general thought, we are always looking for what is going wrong, it's human nature, but we rarely look for what is going right. This is one of the most important things you can do as a parent. Recognize the positives and praise your children for the things they do right. But be careful that you praise them in the right way. Just saying "you are doing great" isn't always the best way to let them know you see that they are trying to learn something. So instead, try equating working and achievement together. You can say something like "Wow, you worked really hard to do that" or "I'm so proud of how hard you worked to get your kick higher".

Help your child to learn to say "I CAN TRY" or "I ALWAYS TRY MY BEST" and you will start to see the changes in your child that are positive and confidence building. The more we help them to use words like this is when they will start to build confidence. Make sure you are working to catch them doing things the right way, especially when they work hard to do it. Let them know that mistakes are expected and okay when they are trying to learn.  Setbacks are an essential part of the learning process. Keep working at these things with your child and they will master the ability to always say "I CAN TRY"!
